funny American names

16 Nov

Going through a period of indifference to this blog. Hence, the only – very modest – thing that seems to strike me worthy of blogging about at the moment are two funny names I’ve come across belonging to two quite prominent Americans:

1) Rabbi BASIL HERRING, Executive Vice President, Rabbinical Council of America

2) WOLF BLITZER, CNN anchor

Americans really do have daft names, don’t they?

PS: I’m pretty sure that I didn’t imagine this, but I remember also seeing some news correspondent on CNN or one of the other news channels whose first name was PIGEON (it was a female journalist). But can’t seem to find her on Google.

(Hopefully my next post will be more edifying)

basil herring is indeed a funny name and a good recipe, however he is from south africa and NOT the US. so it is NOT an American funny name.
Wolf blizer was born in germany so omce again it is not an American funny name.

There’s Faith Popcorn, though she was born Plotkin. She bills herself as a “futurist” – great work, if you can get it. And I remember reading about the grave of someone named Preserved Fish, from back in Colonial days. Lots of Americans (or new immigrants, as so many were back then) had funny names in those times. My own ancestor William Brewster named his sons Love and Wrestling. And I have a string of female ancestors named Thankful.
